Physical Description
Saitō Benkei is a seven foot tall anthropomorphic Hokkaido Wolf. His facial features are delicate and refined, giving him an androgynous appearance.
Species Origin and Biology
Benkei was created from Hokkaido Wolf DNA as part of Japan’s transhuman program. His design focused on combining genetic enhancements with traditional combat training. His physical abilities exceed human limits, giving him exceptional reflexes, endurance, and sensory perception. He can detect movement and scents at long distances, allowing him to anticipate attacks before they happen.
History
Benkei was created to serve as an elite swordsman for the Japanese army. His training followed a strict martial arts regimen, incorporating kenjutsu, judo, kyūdō, and other traditional disciplines. Unlike other transhumans who relied on cybernetics, Benkei was designed to master the art of swordsmanship, making him a specialist in close combat.
As a child, he was educated in all of the traditional school subjects but also most of the European languages. As he grew older, he was trained in combat. Not only is he proficient with swords but also firearms, although he has never used them in combat.
During World War III, he fought in multiple battles, wielding the Tenka-Goken, a set of five legendary swords, each with unique properties. As the war devastated Japan, he continued fighting, but when the conflict ended, he was left without a command structure. With no orders to follow, he became a wandering warrior, traveling across Japan to protect civilians and maintain order. He engaged in combat only when necessary, intervening against bandits, warlords, and rogue machines that preyed on survivors.
Rumors of Sigma City eventually reached him. Seeing it as a place where transhumans and war survivors gathered, he set out to find it. His reasons for going are unclear, whether he seeks purpose, allies, or new challenges remains unknown.
There are unconfirmed reports that he may have a twin sister. No evidence has surfaced to confirm her existence. Since Benkei is a Bishōnen, they likely cannot be told apart.
Personality
Benkei follows a strict code of discipline. He rarely reacts impulsively, preferring to assess situations before taking action. Despite his reserved nature, he is highly empathetic, showing kindness through actions rather than words. He does not seek recognition or reward for his efforts.
His upbringing in a militant environment instilled a sense of duty that governs his behavior. He values restraint and does not fight unless necessary. He holds himself to high standards, believing that combat should be a last resort, which conflicts with his inability to speak.
Though he is physically strong and highly skilled, his effeminate mannerisms set him apart from the typical warrior archetype. His interactions are respectful and deliberate, and he does not engage in unnecessary aggression.
Strengths and Abilities
Benkei is a master swordsman, trained in multiple forms of Japanese combat. His reflexes and agility allow him to move faster than most opponents, and his enhanced senses make him highly aware of his surroundings. His combat style focuses on speed, precision, and strategy, allowing him to outmaneuver stronger enemies.
He can jump exceptionally high and run at a blistering 60mph (100kph) and jumping to an astounding 5m/15ft.
Equipment and Armor
His armor is based on traditional samurai designs, built with UHMWPE and titanium to provide protection without restricting mobility. It is resistant to conventional weapons while remaining lightweight.
He carries minimal personal belongings, keeping only essential supplies and any artifacts of personal significance in the various bags and pouches inside and outside the armor.
Weapons
Benkei wields all five Tenka-Goken, each possessing unique properties. These swords are his primary weapons, and their abilities make him a formidable opponent. He also carries a sidearm, although he has never had to use it. He makes smoke bombs and uses them to disorent his opponents.
Weaknesses
Benkei's inability to speak limits communication, making interactions more difficult. His low-light vision puts him at a disadvantage in dark environments, and his sensitivity to certain light wavelengths can temporarily impair his vision. He also has food allergies, which, while not life-threatening, require him to be careful with his diet.
