Sigma AU Spotlight: St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg

In the Sigma AU, St. Petersburg is the Russian equivalent of Sigma City. However, it was ruled by Ravenna Wildfire who used her strength and magic to take over the ruling body, instilled a tyrannical dictatorship, and installed loyalist armed guards to patrol the city and suppress dissidents.

Layout and Districts

St. Petersburg retains the borders it had when the Third War started. However, around the main city, large, tall concrete embattled walls with watchtowers and guard posts are erected in a jagged semi-spiral/concentric circle pattern around the city, and access to the Gulf of Finland has been completely cut off and is heavily guarded and patrolled, largely in fear of an invasion.

Roads in and out of the city, including the M10/M11, E105, E95, E20, A118, and the waterside roads are kept in serviceable condition.

Trushchoby District

The first and largest outer district is the poorest slums, known as the Trushchoby District. Makeshift shacks line the streets, towering above, and there is little to no waste disposal. People live worse than medieval peasants, doing whatever they can to simply stay alive. Crime is rampant, and the overcrowding is much like Kowloon Walled City. This district serves secondly as a decent protection of the outside of the city, as the density easily discourages any would-be invaders.

Prostolyudin District

The second district is known as the Prostolyudin District. It is home to the city's primary workforce, who live in large, cramped, dilapidated, brutalist apartment blocs that tower above. Every decade or so some workers try to form a union, only to be squashed by Ravenna's militant might, often causing mass loss of life and leading to entire buildings being empty or mostly empty.

Mashina District

The Mashina District is filled to the brim with factories and greenhouses, producing any manner of things, and this is where the majority of workers from the Prostolyudin District are employed. Factories include clothing, woodwork, and weapons and armor for Ravenna's guards. The only residence in the Mashina District are for the factory overseers. The factories are dangerous, lack any safety features, and deaths are frequent.

Zelenyy District

This is a large buffer zone of publicly accessible parks, filled with grass and trees, between the Mashina District and the second to last district, the Bogatyy District. Violence and murder are common here, especially at night. The Neva River runs through the middle of this district.

Bogatyy District

This is where the wealthy, important, or protected individuals live, including scientists, some factory overseers, guardmasters, and military lieutenants live. It is a very wealthy district, and some people even had working cars.

Korolevskiy District

This is the innermost part of the concentric districts, and the fork in the Neva River runs right through it. On the fork and in the dead center of the district rests Ravenna's castle, a newly built stone structure made from stone excavated from the various mines and oil drilling sites around St. Petersburg, placed where the old Museum of Anthropology used to be. Churches and shrines to Ravenna are abundant, and only Ravenna's loyal servants and members of her court live here. The district is heavily foritied and guarded by the most well trained elite guardsmen.

Dikiye Zemli

Outside of St Petersburg are dense forests, where those exiled from the city or those not fortunate, brave, or desperate enough to live within the city's walls reside. The land is still controlled by Ravenna, and she collects taxes on anyone who dares to build a life outside the walls. Mutated creatures are frequent, life is hard without social support, and taxes are collected monthly. The few people who live outside the walls opt to farm, fish, or raise livestock, selling what they can at markets.

The Burning Mine (Goryashchaya Ghakhta)

The Burning Mine is a large cavern deep underneath St. Petersburg filled with oil, coal, minerals such as iron and copper, and secret passages between the districts. The mine is only guarded at the primary entrances, and nobody is allowed to enter or leave without their IDs.

Mutated creatures

Around St Petersburg, and Russia as a whole, there are many mutated creatures, and many are dangerous.

Mutated Wolves

There are a variety of mutated wolves, most being larger, stronger, and even more ferocious than a non-mutated wolf. Etrius had become quite good at hunting them, waiting until they pounce before firing a shot.

Olenvolkgrif

The Deer-Wolf-Vulture, a hideous, mutated amalgamation of all three creatures, is a gigantic, twenty-foot (6m) tall quadrupedal creature with the head of a wolf, antlers of a deer, and the wings and tail of a vulture, covered in the soft brown and white fur of deer. It has incredible strength, nearly unmatched agility and speed, and hunts wolves, deer, mutated tigers and leopards, and anything else that moves. Etrius fought two on his way to St. Petersburg, and Ravenna keeps one as a pet, forcing Vladimir Petrovich to experiment on it.
