Velnoth
The Velnoth are an ancient extraterrestrial reptilian species and the only known non-terrestrial civilization to have independently developed intelligent life within the Sigma AU. Their civilization predates recorded human history by millions of years and at its height occupied several star systems, combining conventional science with magic in ways that made the distinction between the two largely irrelevant to Velnoth engineering.
For much of their history, the Velnoth regarded themselves as custodians of developing life. This belief eventually developed into a cultural conviction that their ability to influence the development of another civilization placed them above the species they cultivated. Earth became the only known example of such a project, as the Velnoth never discovered another inhabited world.
The original Velnoth civilization no longer exists as an independent society. Queen Zayara, formerly a legitimate member of its royal line, ultimately destroyed the Velnoth homeworld after her exile and rise to power. No known non-Zayara Velnoth population survives as a functioning civilization.
Biology
Velnoth are humanoid reptiles standing approximately 6 to 8 feet tall, with most individuals possessing lean, muscular builds. Their general appearance varies by sex but remains recognizably reptilian.
Males tend toward a generalized lizard-like form, with digitigrade legs and feet. Females possess more prominent cobra-like characteristics, particularly around the head and neck, while retaining an otherwise broadly humanoid reptilian build. Female Velnoth are plantigrade.
Zayara should not be treated as a representative baseline Velnoth. Her sapphire and black coloration, cyan bioluminescence, and several other traits are the result of extensive deliberate genetic engineering. Natural Velnoth appearance is considerably less specialized and more variable.
A typical Velnoth lifespan is approximately 128 years. They experience ordinary aging and senescence rather than biological immortality. Advanced medicine can preserve health and function, but old Velnoth still become visibly and physically old.
Zayara's apparent presence across thousands of years does not reflect a natural lifespan of that magnitude. A considerable portion of her history was spent aboard spacecraft traveling at velocities approaching the speed of light. Relativistic time dilation caused far less time to pass from her own perspective than passed elsewhere.
Genetic Variation
Several notable Velnoth traits follow relatively simple dominant and recessive inheritance patterns.
Venom production is recessive. Some Velnoth are naturally venomous while others possess no functional venom system at all. Zayara's neurotoxic venom is substantially influenced by later engineering and should not be considered a universal species trait.
Hermaphroditism is likewise recessive. Most Velnoth develop as male or female, while compatible combinations of inherited traits may result in individuals possessing both reproductive systems.
Reproductive mode is also genetically variable. Egg-laying is dominant, making oviparous reproduction the more common condition. Live birth is recessive but entirely natural within the species. Artificial gestation is technologically possible, although traditional Velnoth society generally discouraged its routine use in favor of biological reproduction.
Bioluminescence
Bioluminescence is not a normal Velnoth characteristic.
Zayara's cyan luminous markings are a deliberately engineered phenotype developed as part of her extensive genetic self-modification. Their ability to reinforce her hypnotic and psychological influence is similarly specific to her rather than an innate ability of the species.
As a result, Velnoth should not generally be depicted as glowing reptiles or as naturally possessing visual hypnotic displays.
Telepathy
Telepathy is the Velnoth's primary form of communication.
Velnoth telepathy does not function as spoken language transmitted directly into another person's mind. It transfers concepts, knowledge, and emotional context directly between individuals.
For example, if a maintenance worker requires a specific replacement component, they may communicate that requirement to a parts clerk. The clerk does not mentally hear the sentence "I need this part." Instead, the clerk simply comes to know that the maintenance worker requires that particular component and simultaneously understands that the maintenance worker is the source of the information.
There is no necessary intermediate language.
This allows information that would require several spoken sentences to be transferred as a single coherent concept. Identity and context are carried naturally with the communication, reducing ambiguity over who communicated something or what they meant.
Ordinary Velnoth telepathy is deliberate. It is communication, not unrestricted mind-reading. Individuals may refuse incoming contact or shut themselves off from telepathic communication entirely.
Physical distance is unusually unimportant. Two Velnoth primarily need to be mutually aware of one another's existence for communication to remain possible. Uncertainty can interfere with this process, however. If the sender does not know whether the intended recipient is still alive, conscious, or otherwise capable of receiving communication, transmission becomes less reliable.
Spoken Language
The Velnoth possess spoken language, but it is culturally neglected.
Because direct conceptual communication is faster, more precise, and capable of carrying emotional context that ordinary speech cannot easily reproduce, spoken communication historically had little reason to develop to the same degree as telepathy.
A Velnoth speaking aloud is therefore not intellectually limited or incapable of complex language. Spoken communication simply occupies roughly the position that an inconvenient secondary communication system might occupy in human society.
This can become especially noticeable when Velnoth interact with species such as humans, who depend heavily on sequential language and lack the neurological context Velnoth normally assume during communication.
The Mask of Torment
The Mask of Torment operates through essentially the same conceptual mechanism as Velnoth telepathy, but without the normal protections surrounding it.
Where an ordinary Velnoth may reject incoming telepathic communication, the Mask bypasses that boundary. Its wearer receives emotional and conceptual information directly, including information the source has made no deliberate attempt to communicate.
The result is not conventional thought-reading. A wearer does not necessarily hear another person's internal monologue or receive complete verbal thoughts. Instead, they may simply know that a person is frightened, deceptive, hostile, preparing to act, concealing something, or experiencing another relevant state.
The source of that information is understood instinctively in much the same manner as normal Velnoth communication.
This relationship between the Mask and Velnoth telepathy is central to its function. The Mask effectively removes the ability of another mind to close the normal telepathic boundary, while also forcing a wearer from a species not normally adapted to such perception to continuously process information that would ordinarily be filtered or refused.
Social Structure
Traditional Velnoth civilization was technologically advanced without developing a correspondingly modern political structure.
Its government and social organization more closely resembled the kingdoms and lordships of 11th- and 12th-century Europe than a contemporary democratic or technocratic state. Hereditary aristocracy, royal bloodlines, subordinate lords, and overlapping systems of personal obligation remained deeply embedded in Velnoth society despite its extraordinary scientific capabilities.
The civilization was not necessarily stagnant or opposed to technological development. Quite the opposite: advancement was commonly justified as something performed for the betterment of society as a whole.
The contradiction was that the Velnoth possessed both extraordinary scientific capability and deeply entrenched hierarchical assumptions about authority.
Sex and Authority
Velnoth sexual hierarchy is biological as well as cultural, although the strongest version of this system is largely the result of Zayara's intervention.
Under Zayara's genetic programs, males developed an extreme instinct to serve and obey Velnoth females. This instinct is powerful and deeply rooted rather than simply a social expectation. It remains species-specific and does not normally activate in response to unrelated species.
Zayara's own authority extends further because of her pure royal lineage. Her presence can induce comparable obedience even in Velnoth females and hermaphrodites.
This produces a hierarchy in which sex, hereditary status, and engineered neurological responses reinforce one another. Although older Velnoth society was already somewhat matriarchal and strongly aristocratic, Zayara deliberately intensified those tendencies into a far more rigid biological system of control.
Culture and Self-Perception
Traditional Velnoth culture placed considerable emphasis on collective advancement, continuity, technological progress, and the improvement of civilization.
At the same time, their success produced an extreme sense of superiority.
The Velnoth eventually came to regard themselves as effectively divine because they possessed the knowledge and power necessary to shape the development of another species over geological and historical timescales. Their ability to "keep a garden" became evidence, in their own minds, that they had transcended the limitations of ordinary life.
This did not necessarily mean every Velnoth was personally cruel or tyrannical. It did, however, create a civilization comfortable with treating another intelligent species as something that could be cultivated, corrected, studied, redirected, or discarded.
Individual autonomy therefore occupied an uncomfortable position in Velnoth thought. Their internal society could pursue collective betterment while their external worldview treated entire civilizations as experimental subjects.
Gardening
The term gardening describes the Velnoth practice of influencing developing life over extremely long periods.
The Velnoth did not have a single universal reason for doing so. Motivations included curiosity, boredom, experimentation, the satisfaction of exercising power, and the possibility of eventually producing another civilization capable of succeeding or accompanying them.
In that respect, gardening was often less like a formal imperial program than an enormously consequential cultural hobby.
The Velnoth did not need the garden in order to survive. They maintained it because maintaining it provided purpose, intellectual stimulation, validation, and the possibility of seeing what might eventually grow.
This attitude became particularly important because Earth was unique.
Despite expanding into several star systems, the Velnoth found no other extraterrestrial life. Earth was the only living world they ever encountered outside their own origin.
Humanity therefore became the only intelligent species they had ever possessed the opportunity to cultivate.
Earth
The Velnoth discovered Earth long before humanity developed civilization.
Their interaction with the planet occurred across enormous spans of time and included periods of observation, intervention, abandonment, and renewed interest. Once humanity demonstrated organized civilization and sustained technological development, the species became the focus of the Velnoth's gardening efforts.
Velnoth intervention generally favored subtle long-term influence rather than open occupation. Genetics, technological development, institutions, industries, and historical conditions could all be nudged toward desired outcomes without humanity necessarily becoming aware that an outside civilization existed.
The project never reached its intended conclusion.
Zayara's exile and subsequent conflict with her own civilization disrupted Velnoth activity around Earth. The planet was effectively left unattended for thousands of years, allowing humanity to develop without the oversight originally intended by its gardeners.
Human civilization consequently became technologically advanced, politically chaotic, highly adaptive, and increasingly difficult to predict.
By 2100, the result bears little resemblance to anything the Velnoth had deliberately planned.
Technology
Velnoth technology combines science and magic as parts of the same engineering tradition.
Human civilization developed almost entirely through conventional scientific methods, whereas Velnoth engineering routinely incorporates magical effects into machinery, weapons, power systems, communication, and transportation.
This does not make Velnoth technology universally superior.
Their development followed a very different path from humanity's. Velnoth weaponry, for example, relies almost exclusively on directed-energy systems. These weapons can be extraordinarily sophisticated while leaving Velnoth forces poorly adapted to kinetic firearms and other forms of comparatively crude projectile weaponry.
Human engineering, meanwhile, developed enormous expertise in conventional materials, mechanical systems, ballistics, industrial production, and rugged technologies that function without magical integration.
By 2100, humanity is independently capable of spaceflight. GHI has constructed spacecraft, and a permanent human settlement exists on the Moon. Human civilization remains behind the Velnoth in several advanced fields, but it is no longer confined to its homeworld or dependent upon Velnoth knowledge to leave it.
Magic and Attunement
Most Velnoth possess some natural capacity for magical attunement, but the average individual's abilities are extremely limited.
This widespread low-level compatibility helped allow magic to become integrated into ordinary Velnoth engineering without turning the population into a civilization of powerful individual magic users.
Exceptionally attuned individuals remain extraordinary even by Velnoth standards.
Someone with abilities comparable to Ravenna Wildfire would effectively appear godlike to the average Velnoth. The gap between ordinary Velnoth attunement and the most powerful known attuned individuals is enormous.
Earth contains several other objects of probable Velnoth origin whose histories have not yet been fully documented.
Queen Zayara
Zayara was born into the Velnoth royal lineage and was originally positioned within the legitimate ruling structure of her civilization.
Her ideology increasingly centered on genetic perfection, rigid biological hierarchy, absolute control, and deliberate evolutionary engineering. These beliefs eventually became unacceptable even within the hierarchical culture of the Velnoth, leading to her exile.
Zayara left with loyal supporters and gradually constructed an independent power base. She refined genetic engineering, biological control, cybernetic integration, directed-energy warfare, and magical technology into the foundation of her own empire.
Her eventual return to the Velnoth homeworld was not an attempt at reconciliation.
Zayara destroyed it.
The event effectively ended the original Velnoth civilization and eliminated any surviving independent society capable of representing the species outside her influence. This destruction is one of the primary reasons Zoey later refers to Zayara as "Space Hitler."
