Sigma AU Lore: The Transhuman Arms Race

In the Sigma AU, major world powers pursued the development of transhumans: hybrids of human and animal DNA designed to be the ultimate soldiers. Each country operated independently, sharing little data and often paying billions to obtain genetic research from rivals. Success rates were low, with high failure and mortality rates. By the end of the war, only one transhuman remained from each participating nation, with most never seeing combat. The exceptions were Zoey (Germany), Taylor (UK), and Bestalsh (US), who were alive and roaming on their own volition.

Why Nations Created Transhumans

Traditional augmentation, AI integration, and performance-enhancing drugs had reached its limits. Genetic engineering was the next step, promising soldiers with unparalleled physical abilities. However, due to the unpredictable nature of DNA splicing and cybernetic integration, the process was unreliable. Many test subjects perished or suffered extreme mutations, rendering them useless for military deployment.

Despite these setbacks, governments viewed transhumans as essential to future warfare. Intelligence agencies and military R&D divisions engaged in espionage, sabotage, and black-market dealings to acquire breakthroughs. Some nations struggled to complete their projects before World War III, while others abandoned theirs entirely after catastrophic failures.

Overview of Each Nation’s Surviving Transhuman

United States – Bestalsh (Brazilian Bush Anole)

The US never completed its transhuman project before WW3. However, a lab accident resulted in the creation of Bestalsh, a massive lizard with immense strength but low cognitive ability. She is the only remnant of America’s failed attempt at supersoldiers.

United Kingdom – Taylor Wolfe (Timber Wolf with Eagle Features)

Taylor was designed for infiltration and high-mobility combat, reflecting the UK’s reliance on small, elite forces rather than mass-produced warriors.

China – Ilia (Panda)

Ilia is a true hermaphrodite, a byproduct of China's genetic experimentation. While designed for resilience and adaptability, she never saw combat and was left alone in a destroyed facility as a cub.

Germany – Zoey Lavender (Red Fox)

Zoey was one of the few transhumans to see extensive combat. Engineered for infiltration and high-speed assaults, although she was never enlisted, she saw limited combat in the US armed forces. She later became a mercenary.

Ukraine – Vlasta (Viper)

Vlasta was built for survival in extreme conditions. Her design focused on agility, venomous traits, and adaptability to urban and wilderness environments. Like Bestalsh, she is an oviparous reptile.

Japan – Benkei (Hokkaido Wolf)

Saitō Musashibō Benkei, Japan’s lone surviving transhuman, was engineered from Hokkaido Wolf DNA and trained in traditional martial arts. Clad in modernized samurai armor and wielding the Tenka-Goken, he fought in WW3 before becoming a wandering protector of Japan’s survivors. Upon hearing of Sigma City, he set out on a journey to find purpose in a world reshaped by war

Russia – Etrius, Ravenna, Voss

Etrius is a noble, good-spirited chimera with the appearance of a white tiger. Ravenna is his biological sister, and is quite the opposite - pure evil. Voss is more akin to a niece, and although she is Ravenna's clone, is untainted by Ravenna's evil.
